Chris Van Der Pluym

Chris is a passionate and experienced practitioner with over six years of hands-on work in mental health recovery and drug and alcohol addiction support. His work in this field has involved providing tailored, person-centred care for individuals facing complex challenges, including substance dependence, co-occurring mental health conditions, and social disadvantage. Chris is committed to harm reduction principles and recovery-oriented practice, supporting clients to rebuild their lives with dignity, resilience, and purpose.

In his addiction support work, Chris has delivered one-on-one counselling, facilitated group programs, collaborated with multidisciplinary teams, and worked closely with families and community networks to create sustainable pathways to recovery. He is skilled in trauma-informed care, relapse prevention planning, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based approaches that empower individuals to take control of their healing journey.

With eight years of experience as a teacher and a strong academic foundation—including a Master of Social Work from RMIT University, a Master of Teaching from La Trobe University, and a Bachelor of Social Science from Swinburne University—Chris brings both deep empathy and practical structure to his work. He is especially passionate about supporting youth and those at early stages of change, helping them set meaningful goals and build lasting self-confidence.

Away from work, Chris is a big believer in balance. He loves staying active through sport, getting outdoors, enjoying great food, and spending time with his dogs.
